The pledge is a big controversy in public schools. The pledge of allegiance is an oath to your flag and the republic which it stands for, under god and to have liberty and justice for all. Some students don’t want to recite the pledge so they don’t stand up. This is a big deal for a lot of people. Through time the pledge of allegiance has been altered. It violates your freedom of speech and religion which is part of the first amendment. Demanding people to say the pledge goes against a lot of people’s beliefs and it is actually illegal to force anyone to stand or even recite the pledge. Therefore, students should not be required to participate in the pledge.Demanding students to say the pledge goes against a lot of people’s beliefs. For instance, “It’s not practicable or reasonable for the government to stage inquisitions into people’s motives for why they don’t want to participate”(Students Pledge). This proves that the government cannot make anyone say the pledge they don’t want to or it goes against their beliefs. This would be violating your freedom of speech because if the government is forcing you to say the pledge. If you refuse to say the pledge then you wouldn’t be free to say what you want but instead, you would be forced against your beliefs to say the pledge. Next, “The establishment clause says that the government cannot endorse or fund any religion and may not pass laws that restrict people’s religious beliefs”(Battle Over the Pledge). This shows that by saying the pledge in schools is breaking the establishment clause because they are passing laws that restrict people’s religious beliefs. If you have different religious beliefs than others than others you may not want to recite the pledge so it would be restricting you from you religious beliefs. In other words, the pledge of allegiance goes in counter to what others beliefs are so adults should not make students unwillingly say the pledge. Furthermore, it is illegal to force anyone to stand or say the pledge. For this reason, “You can’t be forced to swear allegiance. The government can’t compel citizens to speak a certain way or think a certain way. They can ask, but not compel”(Students pledge). This is important because this further proves that no one can compel you to do something or in this case, saying the pledge. In the pledge you are pledging allegiance to the flag and the United States of America. If you don’t want to do the pledge it should be allowed because you cannot unwillingly swear allegiance. In addition, “…no one can legally be forced to say it or even stand up for it, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1943″(Students pledge). This shows that you can only say pledge of allegiance willingly. If someone is forcing you then it is illegal. For the reasons above, adults shouldn’t force anyone to say the pledge if they don’t want to because it is illegal. Some may say the pledge makes kids patriotic. However, this is a lie because “It’s like a brainwashing technique…You can’t pound someone into patriotism”(Students Pledge). This shows that if a kid blindly just says the pledge everyday you cannot expect them to be patriotic. They would just be saying it without knowing what it means so it is pointless to think that saying the pledge can make kids patriotic. In conclusion, students should not be required to say the pledge because demanding kids to say the pledge goes against a lot of people’s beliefs and it is illegal to make anyone stand up or say the pledge. If students were required to say the pledge then some people’s beliefs would be in contrast with the phrases “under god” and how they are pledging allegiance to the flag… This would bring a lot of protests and people against the pledge. If students are not required to say the pledge then none of this would happen and everyone would be in agreement. This is why students should not be required to say the pledge.
