INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the Study

Interest
in student learning today is different from the past, because there is no “Interesting”
things in English learning in the classroom, students usually do things that
should not be done in the learning process, such as disturbing their friends,
going to the toilet, sleeping and others. This is because the English teachers
who teach in old and boring way, the interest of learning English becomes low
and only a few students who still pay attention when the teacher explain the
material, although they also do not understand what is explained by the teacher.

Hilgrad
argued that interest is situation or condition of paying attention and enjoying
in some activities and contents. Students’ interest in learning becomes the
most important thing in achieving their learning goals, students with an
interest will surely get the results they expect, if students have no interest
in learning, it will be difficult to learn English. Kartini Kartono (1985:5)
says that if a student has a strong interest in learning a subject, she or he
will pay close attention to that subject. So there should be
necessary tools or media that can improve the English language learning to be
interesting. In this research, the researcher tries to find out what is the
correlation between PACI Model and students’ interest in learning English at
the first year of SMAN 2 Samarinda in 2017/2018 academic year.

1.2  Research Questions

1.      Is
there any significant correlation between PACI Model and students’ interest in
learning English at the first year of SMAN 2 Samarinda in 2017/2018 academic
year?

1.      To
find out if there is any significant correlation between PACI Model and
students’ interest in learning English at the first year of SMAN 2 Samarinda in
2017/2018 academic year.

1.4  Hypothesis of the Study

1.      Null
Hypothesis (H0)

“PACI
Model has no significant correlation with students’ interest”

2.      Alternative
Hypothesis (Ha)

“PACI
Model has a significant correlation with students’ interest”

1.5  Definitions of Key Terms

1.      Correlation
is the comparison between one object with another. Correlation is the
connection between two things in which one thing changes as the other does
(Oxford University Press, 2003:94).

2.      PACI
Model is a framework which consists of PowerPoint, Audacity, Camtasia and
Internet. This framework is used to teach through technology. Adapting Allessi
& Trollip (2001), Model of Instruction and Mayer (2009), Multimedia
Learning, the researcher created the PACI model. It stands for PowerPoint (P),
Audacity (A), Camtasia (C) and Internet (I). The intersection amongst these
four software create four knowledges and skills.

3.      Benjamin
S Bloom (1971:16-17) defines interest as the terms of the individual’s liking,
enthusiasm, preference, and desire. Interest is a desire want students want to
know or learn something.

4.      SMA
2 Samarinda is a senior high school which located in Kemakmuran street number 27.

REVIEW
OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1
Definition
of PACI Model

PACI Model is a framework used to teach
by teachers with using technology as the main media, it consists of PowerPoint,
Audacity, Camtasia and Internet. These four knowledge
and skills cannot be separately. The content or lessons that are designed,
selected, and created by using each of these software are combined to produce a
video multimedia for teaching specific lessons and in this research is Grammar
lesson. (Designing and Developing Supplemental Technology of PACI Model
Materials through Blended Learning Methods, Limbong, E. p.286)

PACI model is designed complete with
unique fonts, colorful, animation, graphics intended for students have a high
learning interest and can help the learner to be able to understand the
presented material. The results show that project-based learning has proven to
be effective and efficient in integrating and implementing the design and
development of the PACI model. (Designing and Developing Supplemental
Technology of PACI Model Materials through Blended Learning Methods, Limbong,
E. p.272)

2.1.1 Concept of PACI
Model

PACI Model as a media for teaching and
help teachers use technology in teaching, PACI Model consists of PowerPoint,
Audacity, Camtasia, and Internet. The following below are some explanations of these
media used:

1.
PowerPoint
is
software that is embedded with Microsoft Office and was introduced many years
ago. It provides a user-friendly interface that lets users create colorful and
informative displays in any subject area. It covers backgrounds, animations,
sounds, and functions that can be formatted to create a limitless variety of
slides for presentation and to set to automatically show according to a present
schedule. It can also be hyperlinked to other technology sources (Morrison
& Lowther, 2010).

2.
Audacity
is a simple software for editing sounds, for instance cutting, copying, pasting
and deleting part(s) of the recording, inserting silences, pauses or music,
splitting recordings into separate tracks, mixing tracks, raising or lowering
the volume, speeding the recording up or down, and even improving the audio
quality by removing constant background noise (Martínez, 2010).

3.
According to Silva (2012) Camtasia is a screen-capture software
that directly records all movement and activities on screen that we are working
on such as typing in word-processing application, surfing the Internet, using
photo editing or web design software and interacting with social networks or
online activities.

4.
Internet
is
the a network consisting of cables and radio signals used to connect millions
of computers to other computers to form the Internet that can be used to
exchange massive database of information (Morrison & Lowther, 2010).

2.2
Definition
of Interest

Interest
is a thing to have if someone has a willingness to do something, according to Hurlock
interest is the result of the motivation which can convey the people to do and
to choose all activity that they want.

Interest
becomes very important thing for someone if he/she wants to do something like
interest in learning English. If someone have a strong intention
in learning English, surely he/she will learn with full attention and feel
happy, so he/she will achieve the results to be achieved, basically interest
comes from the hobby, motivation and willingness.

David
R. Stone and Elvin C. Nielson said, “On personal is a positive interest that
will increase the chance for success.” So, a sense of interest needs to be
possessed by students if he/she wants to learn something and when he/she feels
interested then it will be easy to achieve success in several fields.

2.3
Relevant
Previous Studies

The researcher took a researcher by Nana Nurjanah (104014000304)
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta with the title “The
relationship between students’ interest in speaking and their speaking score”. This
research was attempted to find out if there is a significant relationship
between students’ interest and their speaking score. The researcher gets the
data by using questionnaire as an instrument, using Pearson Product moment
formula to calculate the score and 50 students as a sample. The researcher
using correlation study and distributing 25 items each of questionnaires.
Then,
the result is there significant relationship between students’ interest and
their speaking score.

The second research was took a journal by Effendi Limbong with the
title “Designing and Developing Supplemental Technology of PACI Model Materials
through Blended Learning Methods” This research was designed with the aim to
describe the researcher’s experiences in designing and developing multimedia
technology of the PACI Model. The researcher used interview as an instrument.
To collect the data, 9 Pre-service EFL teachers were participated. The result
of this study that blended learning is effective and efficient for PACI Model
and support EFL teachers to teaching materials.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1        Research Design
In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach by using correlation
research design between two variables and compared those two variables, PACI
Model and students’ interest. In order to find out the correlation between
those variables.

3.2        Population and Sample

The
population of this study is the first year students of SMAN 2 Samarinda in
2017/2018 academic year consisting 9 classes. To get the data, the researcher
only took 42 students in 1 class namely IPS 1 class. In sampling, the
researcher used Non-random sampling because the sample was chosen by himself.

3.3        Data Collection Technique
In
order to get the data, the researcher does these procedures:                                           1. At the first meeting, the
researcher give the exercise to students before they were taught by PACI Model.                                                                                     2. Students answer the
exercise and give back to the research.
                                                     3. The researcher scores
the result of students exercises.                                    4. The researcher
started to applied the PACI Model as a media to teaching several times and get
students attention.                                                                  5. In the end of the
lesson, the researcher once again give an exercise to each students in terms to
know if there is an improvement about their interest in learning using PACI
Model or not.                                                                             6. The researcher scores the result
again to know if there is an improvement of students score.

3.4
Instruments                                                                                                            The researcher using 2 instruments to get the data, PACI
Model and some exercises paper. PACI Model as a media to teaching and exercises
consists of 20 item of questions.

3.5
            Data Analysis Technique                                                                                                      The
researcher using correlation technique in order to compared the score of
students’ interest and scores of PACI Model. To find the correlation among
these 2 variables the researcher using Product Moment Correlation coefficient
formula:

rxy       : Correlation
coefficient between
students’ interest
and PACI Model

N         :
Number of Respondents

X         : Distribution of students’ interest
score
