National identity of an individual refers to the sense of belonging to nation. Belonging to Canadian identity is a high standard characteristic. Canada consists all parts of the world on their ground. From decades, Canada is accepting immigrants of all the caste, color, and religion because of its immigration policies. It is vividly clear that multiculturalism has played a vital and crucial role in Canada’s identity. Culture is a deep term that wrap traditions, customs, and all other human proceedings that are collected and regarded as a characteristic of particular nation.

In early 1970s, it is proved that immigrants who migrate to Canada tend to have the higher employment rate than native-born Canadians, good academic background, nation’s economy also hiked with the increasing number of newcomers, this further promotes multiculturalism, making it a leading part of nation’s identity.
Federal government of Canada took the first step towards promoting the multiculturalism by announcing its first ever policy of multiculturalism which was in a bilingual framework in the year 1971.
The sense of equal celebration of racial, cultural and religious backgrounds is what seen as a multiculturalism in Canada, which promotes multiculturalism as Canada’s identity.
World War II also has a drastic impact to make Canada a multi-culture country. After this war only, Canada start accepting other ethnic groups to migrate in the Canada society. In July 1988, a new uncomplicated, directional policy came into effect when Canadian multiculturalism act was adopted by the government.
In addition, Canada also welcome the European people. Changes were made after each year in policy which target on helping the immigrant community in their cultural development and nurtures their identity among several other communities that were present at that time.
A new leadership of Multiculturalism was formed in 1973, it was made to check the regulation and enforcement of the policy and the changes that were made to increase the effectiveness of the policy.
A Multicultural Directorate was able to help ethnic minorities to get their human rights and succeed in making a discrimination free society.
Immigration played an important role in promoting the multiculturalism in Canada. However, it helps to made multiculturalism as a symbol of Canadian identity. “Multiculturalism may be seen less as a gift of the state of “Canada” to the others of this society, then as central pillar in its own ideological state apparatus”.
All over the world it is also believed that nation of Canada is not going to colonize immigrants but accept them for their better scope and future, this is the primary reason, why Canada and Canadians are loved globally.
During twentieth century, people from countries such as the Europe, Asia, Caribbean, and South America started moving to Canada, and began settling in Canada.
The ratio of people with British, French and Canadian ethnic origins dropped to 46% of the total population.
It was witnessed that diversity in 2001, and 2006 censuses was increased as more than 200 different ethnic backgrounds were identified to live in Canada.
This was regarded as the highest proportion of migration in the 75 years of the Canadian history.
